Construction Documentation
Documentation refers to any communicable material used to elaborate on a particular, system, design or process. Construction documents are a special breed of architectural design documents. They provide all relevant information required by contractors/builders on the construction site. They facilitate a sequential description of each step and specification involved in construction.
  • Presentation Drawings- layouts and contour mapping
  • Shop Drawings- doors, cabinets and small portable structures (pre- fabricated berthing quarters, and modifications of existing buildings)
  • Master Plan Drawings
  • Product Drawings
Step 3 in the Architectural Design process
After the Schematic design and design development phase:
3) Construction Documentation:
  • A construction documents set is created with details, base drawings and presentation, product drawings etc. containing all specifications and information required for construction.
  • Construction documents facilitate easier coordination between the different services, facilities required in the design construction.
  • Construction documents move the architectural design process out of conceptualization and development into real time implementation.
Importance of Construction Drawings
Construction documents -
  • Facilitate planning and estimation of costs, specification and over heads for each step of the construction process.
